  1. Way back around 2500 B.C., Sumerian women wore golden earrings. These were crescent shaped or in the form of hoops.

  2. During the 1860s, European women wore real Brazilian beetles on their ears as earrings. 

  3. Napoleon returned from his campaigns in Italy with cameos. He also started a school of engraving in Paris, which increased the production of cameos that were often set in earrings.

  4. During the 19th century, Catalan earrings would be as long as 14cm. They were so heavy that they had to be supported by another hook placed around the ear.

  5. The first ear clips appeared in the early 1930s. They were designed to envelope the ear lobe and mimic the curls in the hair.

  6. Earlobes of the Egyptian royals in Ancient Egypt were extremely elongated due to the use of heavy earrings from childhood.

  7. Large ear plugs were fashionable in Egypt around 1559 - 1085 B.C. They had a groove around the edge to fit into a large hole stretched in the earlobes.

  8. Greek earrings in 3rd century B.C. featured golden sculptures of negro heads dangling from the centre of each earring.

  9. Around the late 18th century to the early 19th century, women would wear flimsy white dresses clinging to the body. Some wore them wet to enhance the effect, and often ended up dying of pneumonia. These dresses were worn with large geometrical long gold and enamel earrings.

  10. Metal inlay techniques developed by samurai sword makers were used to make pendent earrings in Europe in the mid 1870s.
